NORMAN, OK – It was a long day waiting to get the match underway due to the heavy rain, but it was worth the wait as the No. 14 Texas Tech men's tennis team got a 4-0 win over Wichita State in the first round of the NCAA Championships at the Headington Family Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Oklahoma.
Tech (22-5) started off the night by winning the doubles point for the 19th time this season with wins at No. 2 and No. 1, respectively over Wichita State (14-9). Gonzalo Escobar and Andre Stabile were victorious over Vlad Marinescu and Adrian Chermaci, 8-3, at No. 2, while 17th-ranked Raony Carvalho and Rafael Garcia defeated 86th- ranked Sven Kasper and Valentin Mihai, 8-3, at No. 1.
In match point of No. 1 doubles, Carvalho and Garcia went for the same overhead shot with Carvalho hitting Garcia in the hand with his racket, breaking the racket. This caused Garcia to be pulled out of the singles lineup at No. 3. The Red Raiders moved everyone up a spot and inserted David Gonzalez in at No. 6.
The Red Raiders continued to dominate in singles as 37th-ranked Escobar cruised to a 6-0, 6-2, win against Marinescu at No. 2, to give Tech a 2-0 lead. Then came at victory at No. 5 as Raphael Pfister battled back from being down 4-1 in the first set to win 6-4, 6-1, over Matheus Pereira. Clinching the match for Tech was 17th-ranked Carvalho as he dropped Kasper, 6-1, 6-2.
"It was a great team effort," said head coach Tim Siegel. "We came out with a lot of energy and focus. I was proud of the entire team. It was a great effort for Ray (Raony Carvalho) to play injured. I'm looking forward to a great match tomorrow."
The win improves Tech's NCAA Championships record to 5-9, advancing to the second round for the fourth time.
Tech will face the winner of the No. 20 Oklahoma-No. 40 Tulsa match in the second round on Sat., May 15. The match is scheduled for 2 p.m., if weather permits. If the match is forced indoors it will start at 5 p.m.
