LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) – May is Stroke Awareness Month and time again to get the word out that you need to act fast if you think you may be having symptoms. Tim Smith, the Stroke Coordinator at Covenant, says there's a reason for the stroke awareness slogan, time lost is brain lost.
"You can be laid up in bed, you can be paralyzed, unable to speak, unable to work, talk and take care of yourself," said Tim Smith, R.N., the Stroke Coordinator at Covenant. "You have to call 911, we have the best paramedics in the world in Lubbock, TX and we need you to activate the 911 system, if your signs and symptoms develop, we have three hours to give you clot busting medication that can save your life."
F.A.S.T is an acronym of stroke symptoms.
"F" means face, can you smile? Is one side drooping?
"A" means arms, can you raise both arms?
"S" means speech, is your speech slurred?
"T" means time, many have just a three hour window to get a drug that can reverse the damage after a stroke.
So, if you suffer any of these symptoms, call 911 as soon as possible.
