LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) – Bond has been set for a Lubbock grandfather that was indicted for the capital murder of his step-grandson.

Clifford Coles, 52, was arraigned and a bond of $500,000 was set on Wednesday. Coles is behind bars at the Lubbock County Jail after a grand jury handed down an indictment Tuesday afternoon.

Shawn Smith died on March 5, 2009 just days before his first birthday. His death was ruled a homicide. According to the Medical Examiner's Office, the cause of death was blunt force injuries but officials would not go into specifics about where on Smith's body those injuries were.

Doctors in the emergency room at University Medical Center called police to the hospital when they realized the baby's injuries did not match the story that was told, and did not appear to be accidental.

Police records list Coles as a suspect in the 1986 murder of an 11-month-old named Tro Williams. Coles was never arrested in regards to that case.

Under Texas state law the murder of a child under the age of six is eligible to be capital murder.
