The Lubbock Area United Way released it's fourth annual report Tuesday that identifies Lubbock's strengths and weaknesses. Here a few of the good things the report found:
- A low unemployment and low cost of living.
- Declining crime rates, specifically murder, rape, robbery and car theft
- Improving standardized test and college entrance exam scores at LISD.
But as we said with the good comes the bad. Here are some of Lubbock County's negatives.
- High numbers in adolescent mothers, unmarried mothers and low birth weight babies.
- More than 75% of Lubbock metropolitan employees earn less than $10 an hour.
- A high number of adults and children with no health insurance.
- The domestic violence rate is higher than the national average.
- The number of child abuse cases is higher than the state average.
The Community Planning Model is a collaborative effort between Lubbock Area United Way, Lubbock Regional MHMR, Covenant Health System, the City of Lubbock, Lubbock County and the Lubbock Independent School District.
