Food for Thought Report 5.27

Inspectors force Pepe's Tacos inside the National Flea Market at 1808 Clovis Road to close after eight violations were found - many of them repeat violations.

  • Inspectors say the number of reoccurring violations shows the manager does not have proper knowledge of food safety handling.
  • Burritos were not at least 135 degrees.
  • There was no thermometer available to check food temperatures.
  • There was no hot water, and the cold water had very little pressure.
  • There were no paper towels.
  • Employees were not washing their hands.
  • The food prep and contact surfaces were not being properly sanitized.
  • Employees were eating while cooking.

According to the report, only one violation was corrected during the inspection, but was then closed until all violations could be corrected.

We were unable to get a comment from management since Pepe's Tacos is only open Friday through Sunday.

We find our first top performer at another flea market. Panaderia Tres Hermanos serves up a family-sized portion of perfection inside the Texas Flea Market at 2323 Ave. K.

El Gallito at 914 E. 34th Street cleans their way to the top once again.

If you're thinking outside the bun make a run for the boarder. Taco Bell at 2408 82nd rolls through their inspection with zero critical violations.

Our next stop is a sandwich shop that dares to be different. Quizno's at 7301 University grills up another perfect score.

And this repeat top performer is still cluckin' toward perfection. Chicken Express at 4704 4th Street flies away with a flawless inspection.

Finally we wrap up this week's top performer at the top. The Lubbock Club at 1500 Broadway serves up a perfect plate.
