LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - Getting to know your neighbors maybe the best way to prevent crime in your neighborhood. That's the message from National Night Out organizers.
Carol Hedrick is the executive administrator with the Lubbock United Neighborhood Association (LUNA). She tells KCBD that knowing her neighbor stopped a burglar from getting away with their stuff.
That neighbor saw the suspect, knew he shouldn't be there, and alerted police. "Fortunately, we got to keep all of our belongings because of his quick action and because he was home. So get to know your neighbors. You never know when you can be of help or they can help you," Hedrick said.
Tuesday night, LUNA is helping to make it easier to meet your neighbors by hosting their National Night Out registration meeting at Saint John's Methodist Church at 15th St. & University Ave. in Lubbock.
It's a time for groups to request city, police, and fire representatives to speak at National Night Out events. National Night Out is Tuesday, August 3rd. It's a time to have the neighborhood come out and get to know each other and local law enforcement.
LUNA has been a local sponsor of the program for more than 15 years now. "No matter the economic status of your neighborhood there's crime. Crime knows no boundaries. Your event can be small or large, just have an event," Hedrick said.
Tuesday's meeting starts at 7:00 p.m. Even if you're not requesting a speaker, you're encouraged to register your event with LUNA. If you can't attend, they ask folks to let them know by calling the LUNA Office at (806) 749 5862.
