LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - With century mark high temperatures in the forecast, how are folks planning to deal with the heat during area events this weekend? KCBD NewsChannel 11's Michael Slother spoke with a few event coordinators who have stocked up on all the necessary items to keep you cool.
One of Saturday's events is a volleyball tournament. With near record highs expected, they're changing things up to keep participators cool. Instead of playing on hot sand, they'll be playing in cool muddy water.
Communities in Schools Event Coordinator Becky Householder told KCBD NewsChannel 11 that despite the hot weather, they're prepared to accommodate their supporters. "We also have a couple of paramedics from the National gGard out here just to keep an eye on people and if we have any trouble we'll be able to assist them," said Householder.
Across town, Plains Capital Bank is hosting an event of their own. They, too, are aware of the sweltering temperatures expected.
Because they're expecting a major turnout, they've beefed up efforts to make sure everyone stays cool and has a good time. "We're gonna keep everybody cool. We've got all kinds of things to keep people cool. We've got water slides, we've got misters, we've got 100 cases of water, we've got soft drinks for people. We're gonna have tents up. I think we have about 12 or 13 tents that are gonna be up. We're gonna keep everybody busy and active," says John Owens with Plains Capital Bank.
Being busy and active during these temperatures is ok, but it's important to know how to take care of yourself. Covenent Emergency Room Dr. Jose Lizarribar offers his advice. "You need to wear light clothes. Dark keeps the heat on it. Also, what kind of activity you're going to have. If you're going to some kind of exercise you need to drink water way before you start, during, and afterwards. Also, you can't take too much water so you also take electrolytes so you have to take things like Gatorade," said Lizarribar.
