LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - The game of baseball taught all of us a life lesson last week. If you missed it, with just one out left in the final inning, Detroit pitcher Armondo Galarraga lost his chance at a no-hitter when umpire Jim Joyce blew a call at first base.
You could feel the disappointment by everyone including the opposing team. But what happened next becomes the story. Instead of staying silent, the umpire immediately watched the tape, saw he got it wrong and then apologized to Galarraga.
Then Galarraga returned the same class the next game by delivering the team line-up and shaking the hand of the ump that cost him the perfect game.
Consider This: for getting it so wrong, this umpire sure got it right, and what a rare teaching moment for every coach, player, and parent on both sides. We will all blow it sometimes. Also, people are going to let us down. But how we respond will show our true colors. This situation could have been very bad for both umpire and player. But instead one admitted he was wrong and the other returned the gesture by forgiving him.
We may not always get that perfect game, but we always have a chance to handle it in a perfect way.
