LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) – A disgraced former Lubbock official is once again back in the news and it once again is a matter of life or death for a capital murder defendant.

Former Lubbock County Deputy Medical Examiner Paul Shrode was recently fired from El Paso County accused of many things including falsifying his resume while here in Lubbock to get the job in El Paso.  In late May, an Ohio man was removed from death row, in part because of problems with Shrode's testimony.

In this most recent case, lawyers are trying to get Michael Perry off Texas death row and Shrode is one of the reasons why.  They say Shrode's testimony put Perry on death row for a 2001 triple murder in Montgomery County.  But they go on to say Perry is innocent.

Only complicating matters, they claim Perry gave a false confession, which led police to not thoroughly investigate. The defense team says it has evidence that Perry was actually in jail at the time of at least one of the three murders.  Perry lawyers just filed their petition a few days ago with the Texas Board of Pardons & Paroles. A response is still pending.
