LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - The Lubbock ISD board met this morning and with a unanimous vote, passed an employee wellness screening motion. Beginning in August, employees will be able to get their screening, which helps find potential health risks before the kids get there.

Barry Holly, a physical education teacher, says one of his screenings was life changing. "Through this last screening it picked up that I had high blood sugar. With having high blood pressure I went to my normal physician who said 'you have type 2 diabetes we've got to get after this real quick.' I guess I'd say it saved my life," Holly said.

The board will pay for the screenings through the internal self insurance fund. Bill Tarro, of LISD risk management hopes to offer incentives to get them to participate.

Risk management says employee wellness programs help create and maintain a healthy work environment, cuts down on absences, and increases productivity.

"Its been proven that if you do some wellness and are proactive in wellness that it does help your employees, the absenteeism, it keeps them in the classroom," Tarro said.

"We'll have some type of incentive, we're not sure what, but they'll be an incentive for you to go get this wellness screening done, probably a premium reduction, so you have something to do this for," says Tarro.
