Man injured in Midland explosion recovering at UMC

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - A Midland bomb technician is recovering at University Medical Center in Lubbock after he was hurt while dismantling an explosive Thursday.

Midland police tell us it happened at their training facility. Sergeant Brian Rackow was preparing an oil field explosive for a training exercise when it blew up in his hand.

"Just one of those unfortunate accidents that you hope never happens, and when it happens to one of your own, it just,  it does really break your heart," says Sergeant David Garcia with the Midland Police Department. 

Officer Rackow is being treated for injuries to his face, chest, arms and legs. To ease the pain on both the department and his family, Lubbock County Sheriff's Deputies are visiting UMC and helping with accommodations and meals.  Midland police say Rackow remains in critical condition, but after surgery his condition stabilized.
