LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - Lubbock unemployment is down according to numbers released Friday by the Texas Workforce Commission. Unemployment went from 5.9 percent in April to 5.7 percent for May (which are the newest numbers). But the improvement comes not from new jobs; instead it comes from fewer people calling themselves unemployed.
The estimated number of people with jobs in the Lubbock MSA actually went down from 140,300 in April to 139,600 in May. At the same time the estimated number of unemployed went from 8,800 to 8,500. The unadjusted statewide unemployment rate was 8.0% for May, or 8.3% when seasonally adjusted.
