Demolition begins at I-27 and 4th Street in Lubbock

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - The demolition has begun on the I-27 southbound bridge at 4th Street.

Both north- and southbound traffic on the Interstate has been moved to the northbound lanes. The traffic has been reduced to two lanes in each direction and is expected to stay this way for six to eight months.

The bridge demolition requires the closing US 82, at I-27. Westbound US 82 traffic is detoured north on the I-27 frontage road to Municipal Drive, over the southbound interstate frontage road and then back south to US 82. Eastbound US 82 traffic is detoured south on I-27 to the 19th Street exit. Motorists will need to use the turn-around at 19th Street onto the northbound frontage road to get back to US 82. These detours are expected to remain in place through Friday, July 2.

Work to build new bridges at the I-27 and US 82 interchange is part of the Phase 4 Marsha Sharp Freeway project. Construction on the $47.7 million project began on April 1 and will build the freeway main lanes and frontage roads, from Avenue L to just east of I-27, and the I-27 interchange.
