What started as shoplifting led to a police chase, an office building evacuation, and an armed robber at large. One suspect, 26-year-old Laura Elizabeth DeLa Cruz, was arrested, but her partner got away.
Officers followed the man, who was apparently driving a Lincoln Town Car, down the street through shopping centers then they lost him, before finding out he'd fled on foot into this building, CHR Solutions.
One employee in the CHR building told police she saw a large Hispanic man come through rapidly. Minutes later the building was evacuated. About 80 employees stood outside for the next 45 minutes while police and a K-9 unit searched the building.
One employee describes the chaos inside. "My VP said there's somebody from Wal-Mart that held Wal-Mart up then we all gathered in one spot and we got real nervous and we saw the police officers with their guns drawn and we decided to stick together then to get out of the building, it was frightening," said Bret Kimbrough, an evacuated employee.
The male suspect is still at large and police aren't sure if he is armed or not. They found one hand gun in the parking lot of McDougal Properties, one of the centers the chase led them through, but the employees at Wal-Mart were sure he had a firearm.
The man is described as a Hispanic male, about 5'7 and 170 lbs. with multiple tattoos. And the witness believed his head was either shaved or cut very short. He was last seen in a white t-shirt and khaki's around 2 p.m. at South Loop 289 and Utica.
