LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - A few observations as the Lubbock area continue to dry out from record rainfall and major flooding. Who could have predicted this would be the scene Saturday night after some reports showed 10 inches of rain fell in less than two days. So how'd we do?
Consider this: The new drainage system had its biggest test yet and the perception may be that it didn't work. Well, I would hate to think what would have happened pre-drainage overhaul. Like the flood of 1999 when about seven inches of rain fell in less than two days. We had less rain then but much bigger problems to deal with. In fact, golf course officials at Lakeridge told KCBD what would have taken six months to drain, should be dry in a week or so. We'll see. Also this event was the hardest ever on the system because, for the first time, the playa lakes were at normal levels instead of very low.
Bottom line, the city's response was adequate and the drainage system, although obviously far from perfect, probably kept us out of the category of natural disaster.
