LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - As many Lubbock residents are taking summer vacations, home burglaries are on the rise. According to Allstate Insurance claims, the rates of burglaries have increased one percent since last year. The insurer is encouraging people to keep their home locked-up and their vacation plans under wrap.
Russell Donaway, an Allstate agent in Lubbock, says a burglary could create a potential dangerous situation if the theft is interrupted.
In a survey conducted by police, suspects usually have a shopping list of items to steal. Allstate says flat screen televisions are typically the number one target in home burglaries. Laptops, jewelry and cash are followed as popular items as well.
Allstate's home theft numbers increased 9 percent statewide in major cities across Texas. Austin saw a 47 percent increase, with Houston seeing an 8 percent increase.
Allstate has four easy steps to safeguard your home:
- Make sure to lock up all doors and windows
- Get an alarm system
- Do not post your plans on Facebook or Twitter
- Protect your possessions; store your valuable items in a safe place
