Two Slaton women hospitalized after one car rollover

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - Two Slaton women remain hospitalized Thursday night, after being rescued from their vehicle along the Slaton highway earlier in the evening.

Investigators say 56-year-old Sarah Gonzales dozed off, and drove her Chevy sedan off the roadway. They say she then over-corrected and rolled the vehicle, trapping herself and 20-year-old Valerie Gonzales inside.

Michael Koontz, who works at a nearby convenience store, witnessed the accident and rushed out to help. "I just jumped inside the car. It was on its side and the mom was hanging by her seat belt, so I just leaned my body up so she could rest her hand and her body on mine," said Koontz.

AeroCare took one of the victims to the hospital, while the other went by ambulance. Troopers tell KCBD both were conscious and alert at that time.

Their conditions were not available at the time of the broadcast.
