Detours, lane restrictions at 19th and West Loop start this week

By James Clark | email

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - Lubbock motorists are being asked to prepare for changes at one of the biggest and busiest intersections in Lubbock;  19th and the West Loop.  Early this week construction crews will switch all traffic onto the southbound overpass so that the northbound overpass can be torn down and completely rebuilt.  Other changes and detours are as follows:

  • Motorists wanting to go east on 19th will have to detour down to the 34th street turnaround and back up to 19th.
  • Those going west on 19th or wanting to go North on the Loop will have to go to the Frankford interchange as a detour.
  • Those of you headed north on the West Loop and wanting to go west on 19th will be asked to get off at 34th and head to Milwaukee.  From there you'll go north to meet up with 19th.

TxDOT says this configuration will last 4 months.  TxDOT also says this is part of a $17.6 million American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) project.  TxDOT hopes to improve safety by removing the 19th Street clover-leaf interchange and replacing frontage roads.  Crews are also widening the West Loop from four to six lanes.
