TAHOKA, TX (KCBD) - The Tahoka Volunteer Fire Department is made up of 20 men who donate their time to keeping Lynn County safe. Steven Sanders is their chief. He's been a part of the fire department for 21-years and says; whoever has the grayest hair gets to be the fire chief.
If you don't find Sanders from his position at the fire station, just check across the street at the only grocery store in town. Sanders spends a lot of time there, and that's because owns it.
"There's several people who come in every day, and I tell a lot of the young people that work here, a lot of people don't have anybody at home; they live alone or whatever. A lot of the times when they come to the store, that's when they see people, and that's the reason they come every day," Sanders said.
Sanders says there use to be 4 or 5 stores around Tahoka. He also says he always keeps his scanner on him. So, if a fire breaks out, he run across the street.
