BROWNFIELD, TX (KCBD) - Most people know that Sheryl Swoopes is from Brownfield and played for Texas Tech, but did you know she was initially recruited by the University of Texas?
She actually left Austin shortly after her arrival and enrolled at South Plains College. After playing for the Lady Texans for two years, she transferred to Texas Tech. In 1993, during her senior year, the Lady Raiders won the National Championship.
Frequently referred to as the "female Michael Jordan," Swoopes is considered "one of the greatest collegiate players of all time."
She was the first player to be signed into the WNBA when it was created, and was the first women's basketball player to have a Nike shoe named after her: the 'Air Swoopes.'
She was released form the Seattle Storm late last year and has since joined the Women's Basketball League in Greece.
