LEVELLAND, TX (KCBD) - Hockley County broke ground on a $15 million Multi-Purpose Event Center. The new event center will be at 2320 South State Hwy 385, across from the Levelland Municipal Airport.
"The Mallet Event Center and Arena is the culmination of more than a decade of work and planning by a dedicated group of individuals who never stopped believing that Levelland and Hockley County deserved to have this opportunity," said Paul Pinkert, Event Center Committee Chairman. "This project opens the door for major retail opportunities in Levelland to continue."
The 155,000 square-foot facility, once completed, will boast an 80,000+ square-foot air conditioned indoor arena, a banquet hall that will seat 800 people and an exhibit hall will encompass approximately 28,000 square feet to be used for boat, car and stock shows. The new facility is expected to be completed by fall 2011.
"This is going to be the biggest arena west of Ft. Worth," said Larry Carter, Hockley County Commissioner. "We're very excited about this endeavor."
Funding for the project was approved through a bond election in May 2009. Dave Quinn, executive director for Levelland's Economic Development Corporation, said with the thousands of visitors who come to Levelland and Hockley County for various events each year, Levelland is poised for growth like never before in retail and housing development as well as job creation.
"This is especially true for students at South Plains College, who want to work, live and go to school in Levelland," Quinn said. "This public investment rides on the momentum created by recent private retail development made in Levelland during the last several years."
In fact, since the opening of the Wal-Mart Supercenter, Levelland has seen a number of retail chains come to town as well as locally owned retail startups, including O'hana Steakhouse & Sushi Bar, Taco Bell, Cato's, Domino's Pizza, Game Stop, Hibbett Sports, Rue 21, Dollar Tree, The Hamburger Construction Company, Noemi's Place, Wooden Testimony, Stueart's PitStop, Holiday Inn Express and Best Western Inn & Suites.
