Levelland: The "City of Mosaics"

Posted: Updated:

LEVELLAND, TX (KCBD) - Created in 1968, a mosaic on the exterior of the Fine Arts Building at South Plains College, began a long tradition.

Now, a total of ten mosaics are on display throughout Levelland, which has become known as "The City of Mosaics," and to more will soon be made.

"Each one of them depicts, history, education, industry or a certain them...all of the things that refer to Hockley County," says Judge Larry Sprowls, Hockley County.

A mosaic is a 6,000-year-old art technique using glass tiles. All the glass used for the Levelland mosaics was imported from Mexico and Italy.
