LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) – A local family is reaching out to the community to help raise money for a kidney transplant. Saturday afternoon hundreds of dollars were raised through a brisket plate fundraiser and raffle to benefit the Gonzales family.
Loving wife, mother of two, and sister to many, 52-year-old Rosemary Gonzales was diagnosed with Wagner's Disease in her kidneys back in 2005. "It's been real hard, very, very hard. I have to be on dialysis just to live. I only have 10% function in my kidneys," Rosemary said.
This will be her second kidney transplant, the first kidney donated by her sister Sylvia was rejected by her body 16 hours after the surgery. "It was hard for me when they told me it didn't work. I wasn't going to be able to get that kidney," she said holding back tears.
Now Rosemary's ready to give it another shot, and this time the donor is her 27-year-old daughter Rebecca Gonzales. "I'm the closest match so there wasn't a question. It's just making sure my mom gets better," Rebecca said.
For her mom, it's a special gift she will never forget. "She said mom, you gave life so I want to give you life," Rosemary said.
After the expensive surgery in mid-September, Rosemary will have to take even more medication than she is now. "She has to take one pill that costs $400 a month with insurance and she takes about ten a day," said Rebecca.
So while both she and her mom are recovering after the surgery, Rebecca decided to raffle off two of her Texas Tech football tickets against Texas and OSU, which she would have to miss anyway. They're also raffling off a five night stay at the Riviera Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas with two show tickets.
But these are small gifts compared to the one Rosemary will get to save her life. "I know… I know it's going to work," Rosemary said.
Raffle tickets are $10 each or 6 for $50. Winners will be drawn August 31st. To purchase tickets you can call Rebecca at (806) 549-0684 or email her by (clicking here).
