Five children taken to hospital after car runs into Lubbock daycare

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - Monday morning at Doodle Bug Square Daycare was not like any other for 8-year-old Caitlin Covington. "I was just sitting there playing with chewing gum when something crashes and then it hit my leg and I was like owe," said Covington.

Caitlin was just one of a group of girls who was in the craft room. That's when police say 32-year-old Eli Rodriguez was dropping off a family member at the daycare when he lost control of his Buick Century and hit the building. "I was scared and I was hoping my teacher wouldn't get hurt," said Caitlin.

Along with four of her friends Caitlin was taken by ambulance to area hospitals, but all with minor injuries. "We are very lucky that it was a different turnout then it could have been," said Caitlin's mother Christine Covington.

Daycare owner Diana McPherson says it could have been much worse. "I mean we have babies on this front window, we have one year olds on this front window, so had it happen on any other spot it could have been very, very disastrous," said McPherson.

While Caitlin will now have a story to tell, a little bit of fear still remains in the back of her mind. "I just don't want to go back just in case," said Caitlin.

McPherson says she is already thinking about what the daycare can do to prevent something like this from ever happening again. "We're going to get some concrete barriers something going up as soon as possible because there is no amount of money that can bring any of these kids back if something were to happen like that," said McPherson.

A close call, turned wake up call that has left many counting their blessings.

Police are still investigating what caused this accident. Right now they believe the driver's accelerator may have gotten stuck.
