LUBBOCK,TX (KCBD) - Do you know who lives next door? That's the question The National Association of Town Watch (NATW) and co-sponsor Lubbock United Neighborhood Association (LUNA) are asking.

"I just know four houses here, but the rest of them we don't know them," says Lubbock resident, Alejandra Castaneda.

"I don't know a whole lot of them. We know more than we used to, but I lived here for 28 years," says Lubbock resident Wesley Martin.

Since so many people do not know their neighbors, NATW and LUNA have announced the 27th Annual National Night Out (NNO) program that will take place Tuesday, August 3, 2010.

"It's a crime prevention tool for people to know who's next door to them, across the street behind them," says LUNA executive administrator, Carol Hedrick.

Every year during the first Tuesday in August, both organizations put on neighborhood events that give people the opportunity to "get to know" your neighbors, discuss neighborhood watch, crime safety and other topics.

"Know each other, you watch out for each other, watch out for different suspicious activity and report it to the police department," says Sgt. Bill Casey.

According to LUNA, over 14,625 communities and 36.7 million people in all 50 states, U.S. territories, military bases and Canadian cities are expected to participate.

"Reinforce ties you already have, make new ties. And even if you have an emergency and you need help you can call on your neighbors," says Hedrick.

The kick off begins at 6:00pm in Safety City 4500 Avenue U Lubbock, TX 79412 with Mayor Tom Martin, Police Chief Dale Holton and other council members.
