LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - Firefighters from around the country will be in Lubbock next weekend to compete in the Carpet Tech Restoration Firefighter Combat Challenge Regional. This athletic event will be held at the west parking lot of the South Plains Mall at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, August 6th, and at 10 a.m. on Saturday, August 7th.
The event features firefighters racing head-to-head to complete a series of firefighting-related tasks in a competition that ESPN dubbed, "The Toughest Two Minutes in Sports." Approximately 100 firefighters from all over North America are expected to compete and try to qualify for a spot at the World Finals XIX in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, in November.
The event is free and open to the public, and will be held rain or shine. There will also be a "Celebrity Relay Challenge" and a free "Kid's Firefighter Challenge" for the little ones to dress up like a firefighter and run through a miniature version of the course. In addition, the Lubbock Fire Department fire safety house and fire clowns will be there, as well as a helicopter from Aerocare (weather permitting) and food and souvenir vendors.
Team Lubbock was founded in 2009 and is currently ranked 8th in the world as a team for the grand national championship. The team is made up of firefighters from the Lubbock Fire Department, including Jason Bobo, Phillip "Gun Show" Grandon, J.W. Ray, Justin Rhodes (Team Captain), and Nick Wilson. They receive no financial support from the fire department, but are able to travel to regional competitions and represent Lubbock thanks to the generous donations of local sponsors. Carpet Tech is the primary sponsor of the team, as well as the title sponsor for the Lubbock Regional.
