LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - Jury selection started Monday morning in a 2008 case where Matthew Gonzales is accused of attempted capital murder.
Three people were arrested after the incident in July of 2008 when Donald Adkins was car-jacked and shot with a shot-gun in the 4800 block of Kemper Street. Adkins was shot several times with pellets from a shotgun.
Police recovered Adkins' 1980 burnt orange Pontiac Bonneville in the alley behind the Tech Inn just a day after the shooting. Adkins says it had been stripped of nearly everything, including the chrome wheels.
Police believe that this was a drug-related crime, but not because of Adkins' involvement in the illegal world. They say that crimes become drug related when drug users commit crimes to buy drugs or to get property or money to trade for drugs.
Matthew Gonzales, Adam Soto and Andrew Ramirez were taken into custody, each on a $250,000 bond. They were all indicted on October 5, 2008.
Matthew Gonzales and Adam Soto are still being held in the Lubbock County Jail.
