Body found in car that plunged into Lubbock lake

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - Lubbock Police are investigating their second suspicious death in the Canyon Lakes System in one day.

Just after 8:45 Wednesday evening, witnesses called 911 to report that a car plunged into Buddy Holly Lake off Erskine and North University. Police say the submerged vehicle appeared to be a gold, 90s model Ford Thunderbird.

Witnesses say the driver was swerving erratically on a sidewalk and grassy area, there is no road where the car entered the lake, then made a large u-turn before driving into the lake.

Lubbock Police and the Lubbock Fire Department's water rescue team responded to the scene. A wrecker pulled the car from the lake, and after more than an hour police confirmed that a body was in the vehicle.

Investigators have not released whether the person in the car is male or female or their age.  We are waiting for more information from the medical examiner's office on the cause of death as well.

One of the witnesses jumped in to try to save the person, but was unable to assist.  Police say he suffered some injuries in the attempt and was taken to UMC for treatment.
