Family loses everything in trailer fire

LUBBOCK, TX (KCDB) - A Lubbock County newlywed couple and their two year old daughter look at the only thing they have left, ashes from the fire that engulfed their trailer and car just before 8:00 p.m. Saturday night. The only thing left their family bond and a miracle.

"The family is alright, a little bit shook up, a little bit in shock. Lost all their belongings. We can start over with that, but you can't start over when you lose a life," says neighbor Pete Trevino.

Trevino called 911 Saturday to the 3400 block of East F. M. 1585 when he saw smoke billowing out of the Romo Family's trailer.

"That's what scared me; I thought the baby was inside of the house. But after everybody started running and getting water buckets, we realized it was empty and no one was home" says Trevino.

Firefighters say they still don't know how it all started.

"They told me it might have been an air conditioner unit. It might have started where the washing machine and dryers are at the fuse box. So it could be a number of things. To right now we're still not sure," says Trevino.

Trevino says firefighters got to the scene with in the half hour. The community tried to save everything they could, but the fire burned too fast.

"Mobile homes tend to ignite quick and burn quick unlike a house, because they're just real thin material," says Trevino.

Now the Romo family is trying to pick up the pieces of a lifetime of memories burned in the fire.

"They lost all the clothes, furniture, everything completely lost it," says Trevino.

Surprisingly their bible was the only item not destroyed by the flames.

"I said where did you all get it from, and they said we got it from inside the house under the coffee table. And it's still in one piece," says Trevino.

The family still wonders where they can call home.

"This trailers only been here a few months. They were going to remodel it and settle down," says Trevino. A sudden tragedy forcing the young couple and their toddler to start from scratch.

An donation account is in Jenny Romo's name at Well Fargo if you would like to help the family out.
