Little hints of recovery in Lubbock economy

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - New stores opening in Lubbock may be a sign of recovery.  You might recall in 2009 the closing of Circuit City was just one of many layoff announcements in the Hub City.  But now this month, that same location is the site of new jobs and a store called Ultimate Electronics.  Ultimate Electronics did not return a call to KCBD NewsChannel 11 asking how many new jobs were created with the new store.

Stripes, the convenience store that replaced Town and Country all over town, will open a new location in Lubbock, and Genghis Grill announced a few days ago it will open a Lubbock location in October.  Locations of Chipotle Grill, and Einstein's Bagel are also coming to town.

Meanwhile, Lubbock sales tax collections are up, according to data released last week by the state Comptroller.  Comparing August of this year with August of 2009, Lubbock's sales tax collections are up 2.7%, and year-to-date it's up 0.65%.
