LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - He demanded a 2.3 grade point average, and neckties on game days. Now famed basketball coach Ken Carter aims to inspire others here on the South Plains.
His story became a major motion picture starring Samuel L. Jackson. It details the events of 1999, when Coach Carter locked his undefeated basketball team out of the gym after finding out 15 of his players weren't making the grades.
Tonight, Ken Carter will encourage Lubbock student to believe that success is within reach. "People don't like change and people are scared of change," says Carter. "When I talk about fears, when you're born as a kid you only have two fears: fear of falling and fear of loud noises. But as we grow up we learn all these other things, I'm not smart enough, I'm not tall enough, and so we talk ourselves out of success. I find that with kids all the time."
Coach Carter will speak at 6:30 tonight at the Estacado High School gym. The event is free and the public is invited to attend.
