LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) – It's that time again for "Get Fit, Lubbock". That's an 8 week competition between groups or businesses in town. It includes exercise, weight loss activities and nutritional support from health and fitness professionals.
This year, though, there is a research component to this community wide effort supported by Texas Tech's Garrison Institute On Aging. That means instead of paying 15 dollars to join the challenge, you could get paid to participate.... IF you let the experts at Texas Tech follow your progress. Dr. Sid O'Bryant is one of the researchers at the Garrison Institute. He explains, "They'll come in and they will do some blood glucose leveIs and cholesterol, height, and weight. Those sorts of things. We'll test them again after the 8 week program, so it's a way of looking at how the program itself works. And they are paid 7 dollars at the very beginning before it starts. Then again at the end of it, another 7 dollars will be part of it as well. And their entry fee is waived."
The competition runs from September 4th to November 7th with 4 people to a team. The "Get Fit, Lubbock" kickoff is set for Saturday, August 24, at 10 am at the Garrison Institute On Aging located at the corner of Quaker and the South Loop. (6630 S. Quaker)
Anyone or any business can sign up for the competition. For more information or to register, call 743-6821 or go to www.healthylubbock.org
