LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) – Court documents reveal insight into the bizarre events that led to the murder of 40-year-old Danny Brazeal on August 7th.
Matthew Yugovich a long time friend of Brazeal said he could not believe the report. "The testimony they recently released. It's unbelievable, how heinous a crime. Cold blooded."
A police report gives details and says 21-year-old Eric Perez and his ex-girlfriend got into an argument and she said she never wanted to see him again. According to documents at that point Perez decided he would kill someone so his ex-girlfriend would never see him again.
"It's just real sad, the more I hear about Eric Perez and the reasons he killed Danny. I'm just really sad there's people like that around. Cold blooded. Just killed him. Just killed him for no reason," said Yugovich.
The documents said Perez ventured to Wal-Mart to purchase a hatchet. Because Wal-mart did not have a hatchet, the police report said Perez bought a Coleman knife instead.
After leaving Wal-mart, Brazeal approached Perez and asked him for money to buy drugs. The report said Brazeal offered Perez to drink whiskey with him in return for money. "Danny has used drugs historically, I don't know about crack cocaine. I don't really know if Danny has been seen or known Danny been doing drugs. He looked healthy," said Yugovich.
The report goes on and said the two began drinking whisky and walked over to the Civic Center. After finishing the bottle Perez and Brazeal knelt down and prayed. After praying, Perez began stabbing the Brazeal in the chest and back multiple times. He also kicked him in the head.
"Danny was a persuasive fellow, he could be persuaded easily. And he was just hanging out with the wrong place and the wrong people. He was an intrepid kid and there was nothing we could do about, he was going to see his friends. And he ran into the wrong person," said Yugovich.
Perez called the police and reported he murdered Brazeal. Perez is charged with murder, he is on a $250,000 bond.
"Danny trusted a lot of people and once again that's his head injury. Danny didn't think he was bulletproof or anything like that. He didn't look at the harmful side of life. He was caught in the world of a 17 year old kid for the rest of his life," said Yugovich.
Danny Brazeal, was found on the west side of the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center. He leaves behind a mother, two sisters, several nieces and nephews, and many friends who will miss him very much.
