ANDREWS COUNTY, TX (KCBD) - A new agreement allows Waste Control Specialists to store low-level radioactive waste at their facility near Andrews for up to three years. The agreements settles a dispute over how long they could store the material. State officials initially wanted a one year limit.
The agreement with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality also requires the company to revise its inspection plan and properly handle surface water in a drainage ditch at its site near the New Mexico border.
Some critics say the Ogallala Aquifer, which is one of Lubbock's water sources is under the facility, but the company says it's not and that they don't leak toxic waste.
