LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) – A water main break at University Avenue and 38th Street has north and south bound lanes shut down Tuesday and could continue until Wednesday.
As of 6p.m. this evening going down University there's only one southbound lane open from 34th Street to 39th Street, and two north bound lanes open. The road closures come after a water main break found Monday morning at the intersection of University and 38th.
City crews have worked on the broken pipeline for two days and finally found the source of the leak early this morning. "I woke up Monday morning and noticed there was water all over the street and next thing I know they're tearing up the streets digging it they were out here all day yesterday," said Jason Casanova who lives nearby the construction. "It's just noisy. All night long there was water shooting up 100 feet in the air until about one this morning."
Crews had to dig about four feet deep to repair the broken pipeline and are now in the process of filling the hole back up that's stretching across two of the southbound lanes. Until the road is completely repaired, some of those lanes will continue to be shut down diverting traffic through neighborhoods.
"The only inconvenience is the fact that it's right here next to my corner and backing out of the driveway is a hassle," said Rudy Samarripas who lives at the corner of University and 38th.
Luckily no one's water was affected by the water leak. City officials say they expect all lanes on University to be reopened by the end of the week.
