LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) – It's back to school time, and that means kids are stuffing their backpacks with books and supplies. Every year, doctors warn that heavy backpacks can cause lasting health problems for children, if they are not worn properly.
Dr. Raiszadeh says, "The backpack can not only just cause the back pain, but it can cause neck pain, it can cause shoulder pain. It can cause mid-back pain." Other concerns include muscle spasms, sway back, leg pain, and in the most serious cases, it can cause disk degeneration. He says kids can reduce the risk by taking stuff out that they don't need on that day, and always wearing both straps on to spread the weight evenly. Those straps should be padded, two inches wide, and fit snugly.
