Severe weather threat this afternoon and evening

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - There is a threat of severe weather late today as our hot and relatively humid air mass is replaced by a much cooler and relatively drier one. During the transition thunderstorms will be likely, with a slight risk of severe weather, and it will get very windy. It is all due to a strong cold front which will move across the South Plains late today.

This afternoon partly cloudy and hot. A slight chance of rain with isolated thunderstorms late. Winds southerly 10 to 20 mph. High around 96 degrees.

This evening and tonight scattered thunderstorms and showers, windy, cooler. Northeast winds may gust to 40 or 45 mph, with gusts over 55 mph near storms. Evening temperatures will quickly fall into the 70s, with an overnight low in the mid 50s.

Friday mostly cloudy and windy early, then mostly sunny, but much cooler. Northeast wind 10 to 20 mph. High upper 70s to near 80 degrees.

Saturday mostly sunny with a warm afternoon. Pleasant morning chill with a low in the low 50s. Afternoon high in the mid 80s.

Sunday mostly sunny and warm with a high in the upper 80s to near 90 degrees.

Labor Day partly cloudy with a very warm afternoon. High near 90 degrees.
