Police written statement about officer-involved shooting

LUBBOCK, TX (PRESS RELEASE) - FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Friday, September 03, 2010

Officers Gerardo Torres and Ryan Durrett were dispatched to 312 54th Street this morning at 3:22 AM to attempt to locate Jose Juan Ortega II, 3-20-83, in order to serve outstanding felony arrest warrants on him.  The officers located Ortega in the driveway of that residence.  While the officers were attempting to take Ortega into custody, he fired a handgun at them.  Officer Torres returned fire, shooting Ortega once in the torso.  The officers were able to secure Ortega quickly, then Officer Durrett notified LPD that shots had been fired and requested EMS. 

Ortega was transported to UMC where he remains.  He has been placed under arrest for Attempted Capital Murder as well as the two felony arrest warrants for which he was originally sought, one for Aggravated Assault related to a recent incident in Hockley County and the other for Parole Violation with an original charge of Burglary of a Habitation.  Arrangements are being made to have arraigned Ortega on location at UMC.
