DALLAS, Texas--UC Davis opened with a 10-1 first-set lead and never looked back in route to a 3-0 victory over Texas Tech in the second match of the SMU Tournament Friday evening at Moody Coliseum.
Despite the loss, Tech saw some positives out of the play of freshmen Sheridan Burgess and Aubree Piper, who saw her first collegiate action earlier in the day against SMU. Piper, coming off a preseason foot injury, finished with seven kills and two blocks, while Burgess added three kills and eight digs.
The Red Raiders inability to get off to a quick start once again came back to hunt them as by the time Tech could get going, UC Davis was already leading 17-7 and ended up winning the first set 25-12.
The Aggies continued their momentum into the second set with an 8-4 early lead that eventually turned into a 25-18 victory, forcing Tech to try to come from two sets down for the second time in the day.
Tech was once again resilient in the third set as it pulled within two points at 22-20, leaving an opportunity to prolong the match. The Aggies responded with three-straight points to close the match, however, forcing Tech to win its weekend finale for the second-straight week.
Caroline Courtney and Amanda Dowdy both added seven kills each for the Red Raiders, while Jackie Vincent added nine digs from the libero spot. UC Davis finished the match with a .309 hitting percentage.
The Red Raiders close the SMU Tournament Saturday afternoon against Texas State. First serve is slated for noon.
