LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - Travel  during the Labor Day Holiday weekend is off to a dangerous start.   A Lubbock man was in critical condition late Saturday morning after motorcycle accident on the West Loop access road at 34th street.

EMS took Brandon Jodel Wood, 38,  to University Medical Center around 11:30, where police said he was placed into the surgical intensive care unit.  Police say Wood suffered severe head injuries.

"What we have been told by several witnesses motorcycle was east bound on 34th from the Milwaukee area" says Sgt. John Hayes, an accident investigator with Lubbock Police.

The rider "was attempting to turn on the access road at what witnesses are calling a high rate of speed," says Hayes. "We have no way of verifying that right now at this point."

Wood's motorcycle skidded and landed on the Loop's embankment.   Police say wood was not wearing a helmet.
