CHARLOTTE, NC (NBC) - Researchers are asking volunteers to count lightning bugs. Roughly 700 volunteers from across the country counted fireflies in their area to see if the nation's lightning population is declining. Scientists are worried that there are fewer fireflies and are looking to see if suburban sprawl could be playing a role. People from 42 states and four other nations have taken part in firefly watch's online effort since it debuted in may 2008.
