Labor Day visitors bring boost to Buffalo Springs Lake

By Michael Slother - email

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - With lower gas prices, AAA expected more people to hit the road this Labor Day Weekend, but there were still plenty of people that stayed to relax on the South Plains.

Many of them were at Buffalo Springs Lake like Jason Sisson. "We didn't have a whole lot of time, and this lake's real close to Lubbock and we just came out here to swim for a couple of hours."

The lake was crowded all weekend long, and people had to move a few times to find secluded areas to enjoy with family and friends.  "We just came out here to enjoy the weather and Labor Day weekend where we don't have to work," Claudia Jimenez continued, "We have t-bone steaks, ribs, and corn…We have all different types of food out here."

Kimberly Harvey works at the Krusty Krab Marina and she wasn't expecting such a crowd. "It was actually was a lot busier this year than we expected. It's been really slow all season but yesterday [and] today really picked us up," she said.

While the marina served food all weekend, Chris Perez enjoyed trying to catch his own. "I caught three baby catfish and I almost caught another fish. I don't know what it was, but it was shiny," Perez said.

Labor Day weekend provided a nice break from work, but it also gave students like Emily Johnson a break from the classroom and gave her more time to spend with her family. "It's nice because I never get to see them when I'm in school."

Everyone we talked to enjoyed their weekend off. All of them wished it would have gone by a little slower. "Back to our regular routine. Get them ready to go to school, and I have to go to work."

The June 12 summit, planned for Singapore, offers a historic chance for peace on the peninsula - but also the risk of an epic diplomatic failure that would allow the North to revive and advance its nuclear weapons program.
