LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) will close 19th Street Wednesday to all through traffic to allow construction crews to place bridge beams for the new northbound West Loop 289 bridge. Work to place the beams is expected to take most of the day.
Several detours will be put in place to move traffic through the construction zone. Motorists are advised to slow down and observe posted detour information. Both east- and westbound 19th Street through traffic will be detoured around the area via the Loop frontage roads.
Eastbound 19th Street traffic wanting to access northbound Loop 289 will be detoured east to Frankford Avenue then north to connect with West Loop.
Northbound Loop traffic wanting to access Frankford Avenue and westbound 19th Street will be detoured off Loop 289 at the 34th Street exit. Traffic continuing on to 19th will be directed west to Milwaukee Avenue then north to make that connection.
Work to build new bridges at the 19th Street interchange is part of a $17.6 million American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) project. Construction began in April and expected to improve safety and mobility through the area by removing the 19th Street clover-leaf interchange configuration and replacing it with bridges and frontage roads, and will widen West Loop from four to six lanes. The work will take place weather permitting.
