LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - The Red Raiders face New Mexico for the 42nd time Saturday at 7 p.m. central time. Tech has dominated the series leading 33-6 with two ties. The Red Raiders know New Mexico will be pumped for their home opener after they suffered their worst loss since 1991 losing 72-0 to Oregon.
Last year New Mexico hung around with the Red Raiders in Lubbock losing 48-28 causing problems for Taylor Potts. The Lobos could be without the nations leading tacklers from last year as Carmen Messina has a high ankle sprain.
With the new Red Raiders look, it's always interesting to see how others perceive the team so here's New Mexico's coach on his take on Texas Tech.
"With Tommy's background and what he's done as a defensive guy, offensively I don't see them throwing the ball around like with Mike Leach," said New Mexico head coach Mike Locksley. "I think there's a little more run game emphasis that they've implemented on the offensive side of the ball. Defensively, they're a little similar to Ruffin's defense, but there's also the guess factor for us because with their defensive coordinator coming from Alabama, we've had to spend some time studying what Alabama did on defense and then compare it to what we saw in their game against SMU this weekend. It's the same thing on the other side of the ball, with Neal Brown coming from Troy; as the offensive coordinator."
