SAN ANGELO, Texas (September 10, 2010) – University of Houston transfer Zuela Adom and returning First Team All-Lone Star Conference member Kristen Wilson combined for 38 kills and University of Central Oklahoma ended No.12 Lubbock Christian University's nine-match win streak with a 3-1 victory (17-25, 25-18, 27-25, 25-23) over the Lady Chaparrals Friday at the Angelo Retina/Angelo State University Invitational inside Junell Center. The Lady Chaps opened the day with a 3-0 win (25-14, 25-20, 25-18) over Texas A&M International University before suffering their first loss of the season to place them with a 9-1 record.
Everything was going in favor of the Lady Chaps against the NCAA Div. II squad early in the match. The Lady Chaps produced a .423 attack percentage in the opening set, with just one attack error committed, and used a 12-3 run to take the opening set 25-17. They combined for four blocks in the set, with Melissa Green involved in three of the blocks and Brittany Johnson assisting with a pair.
The Lady Chaps and Bronchos were tied 12-12 in the second set when Wilson collected three of her 17 kills and then closed the set with three consecutive aces to clinch the set 25-18 for UCO and tie the match at 1-1.
The final two sets went down to the wire and LCU unfortunately found themselves on the wrong end of each set. Trailing 20-17, LCU received a trio of kills from Elissa Loynes to jumpstart a 7-2 run and the Lady Chaps faced set-point with a 24-22 lead. A timeout by UCO spelled doom for the Lady Chaps, as the Bronchos responded with kills from Morgan Roy and Wilson to tie the set at 24-24. Bailey Jones gave LCU the lead with a kill, setting up another set-point, but it was snatched away with a kill from Roy followed by an ace from Roy and a set-clinching kill by Wilson for a 2-1 match lead. A trio of kills from Adom midway through the fourth set put UCO up 17-11 in the set, but LCU did not back down. Jones ended a 5-0 run with a kill followed with an ace, starting an 8-3 run to cut the UCO lead to 20-19. Johnson produced consecutive kills late to tie the set at 23-23, but a serving error by Jones and an attack error by Loynes finalized the set at 25-23 and the match at 3-1 for UCO, leaving the Lady Chaps with the bitter taste of defeat for the first time this season.
UCO had three members produce double-doubles in the match. Fleming Smurthwaite had a match-high 50 assists and 11 digs, Roy had 13 kills and 10 digs and Wilson had 17 digs to match her 17 kills. Adom had a match-high 21 kills and Ginger Gowan led all players with 20 digs. LCU was led in kills by Elissa Loynes, who had 13. Johnson and Jones each had 10 kills. Jones also had 14 digs to join Jordan Goings (45 assists and 11 digs) as Lady Chaps producing double-double totals. LCU only had nine attack errors in the match (compared to 26 by UCO), but UCO kept most of the kill attempts alive with 79 digs, as five different players posted double figures in digs. UCO is 2-1 all-time against LCU, as the two teams were meeting for the first time since 1983.
Here are some additional notes on the loss:
• The loss ended the Lady Chaps 9-0 mark to open the season, which is a program record.
• Combining all active team sports at LCU (men's soccer, women's soccer and volleyball), it is the first loss suffered, as LCU team sports have combined for a 15-1-1 record to open the 2009-2010 school term.
• The Lady Chaps are 9-1 through their first ten matches and have yet to play at home.
• LCU is now 6-1 against NCAA Div.II programs this season.
In their meeting against TAMIU, the Lady Chaps never trailed at any point throughout the contest. A pair of Dustdevils served reception errors and a trio of attack errors let the Lady Chaps open the first set with a 12-4 advantage and they cruised to claim the opening set 25-14. LCU opened the second set with an 8-3 advantage, but TAMIU responded with a 5-0 run to tie the set at 8-8. Things continued back and fourth until the Lady Chaps unlocked a 13-13 tie with a 9-2 run sparked by three straight attack errors by TAMIU. The Dustdevils cut the LCU lead at 23-20, but LCU responded from a timeout with the final two points needed to claim the set 25-20 for a 2-0 match lead. LCU jumped out to a 9-4 lead to start off the final set and led as much as 17-11 before TAMIU rallied to cut the Lady Chaps lead to 20-16. LCU held off the charge and claimed the final set 25-18 for the set and match win.
Jones led all players with 12 kills in the victory for LCU. Johnson was impressive with nine kills and no attack errors for a .692 attack percentage. TAMIU committed 21 attack errors and allowed seven LCU aces. Goings contributed 25 assists in the win for LCU. The Lady Chaps held the Dustdevils to a .089 attack percentage.
The Lady Chaps schedule does not get any lighter, as they continue play in the ASU Invitational Saturday morning with a 9 a.m. tilt against University of the Incarnate Word (Texas) before facing host Angelo State University (Texas) at noon.
