Jones' Golden Goal Lifts LCU Past Texas Wesleyan in Double Overtime 3-2

FORT WORTH, Texas (September 11, 2010) – Dustin Jones missed an opportunity to give Lubbock Christian University a late lead, missing a penalty kick with 7:55 remaining, but he made up for his miss by scoring a golden goal with 3:52 remaining in double overtime to lift LCU to a 3-2 win at Texas Wesleyan University Saturday.

The Chaps opened the game's scoring with defender Tony Valera scoring his second goal of the season just 6:18 into the contest. LCU added to the lead just as time expired in the first half. A yellow card on TWU's Ryan Johnson led to a free kick for LCU with four seconds left in the half. Tristan Long, who scored the game winning goal Tuesday over Eastern New Mexico University, took the free kick and put it past goalkeeper Dominick Gutierrez as time expired and LCU took a 2-0 lead into the half.

Texas Wesleyan came out strong in the second half. 13:35 into the second half, Ivan Kovacevic made a move atop the box to shake off a defender and put in his second goal of the season to cut LCU's lead to 2-1. The Rams tied the game in the 72nd minute, as Ryan Johnson put his noggin on Tyler Mendez's crossing pass and headed it past Chaps goalkeeper Alistair Caldwell.

The second half was active, as teams combined for 26 shots on goal in the half (LCU with 14). Fifteen of the shots in the half were on goal with TWU aiming nine of them on net. Long assisted on Jones' second goal of the season to finish the game with a goal and an assist. Jones had a game-high nine shots and six on goal. LCU out-shot TWU 26-23 in the game and each team kept the goalkeepers active with 14 on net. Caldwell improved to 4-0 stopping 12 shots, which is more saves than he had in the four prior games combined. Gutierrez made 11 saves in the loss for TWU.

The Chaps are now 4-0-1 on the season with the victory and they remain on the road Monday playing at Dallas Christian College. The game time against Dallas Christian has been changed from 5 p.m. to 4 p.m.
