You probably have syrup of Ipecac in your medicine cabinet. That little bottle is about to be under review by an FDA panel of experts this week.
For decades, doctors have advised parents to keep that stuff handy in case a child swallows poison, because syrup of Ipecac will make them throw it back up, but here's a new concern.
Apparently, it's being misused, particularly by teens with eating disorders who want to binge and eat all they can then make themselves vomit to be rid of the calories. So, even though Ipecac has been available over the counter since 1965.
The panel will look into whether it needs to be so easily available over the counter. No word yet on whether the FDA may change syrup of Ipecac to a prescription.
