Summer means that more kids are outside, and what better way for kids to zip around the neighborhood than on a bicycle. Unfortunately, that also means there will be accidents.
And for those kids not wearing helmets, the biggest fear is a head injury. The injury alone is enough to worry about, but the Lubbock, Crosby, Garza Medical Society says there is another problem, it's hard to find nuerosurgeons today who are willing to specialize in pediatarics.
"Because of the high liability insurance, a lot of neurosurgeons are not doing pediatric neurosurgery. That's why we want to prevent those injuries before they happen," says Dr. Elias Ghandour, President of the Lubbock, Crosby, Garza Medical Society.
You may remember the medical society donated 10 helmets as incentives for giving to the Children's Miracle Network. Now, they are providing another 90 for NewsChannel 11 to distribute, hopefully reaching kids who might not otherwise be able to afford a bicycle helmet.
So, we are giving away all those free helmets to those who e-mail us or send a letter asking for a helmet.
To write, send your letters to:
5600 Avenue A
Lubbock, Texas 79404
Please send your request with your name, address, phone number, and the age of the child who needs a helmet. Hurry, our supply is limited. And again, NewsChannel 11 would like to thank the Lubbock, Crosby, Garza Medical Society for trying to keep kids safe this summer.
