LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) – A serious discussion on Capitol Hill today about the danger of young athletes on the field facing concussions. Each year, Emergency Rooms treat 135-thousand sports and recreation-related concussions among kids under age 18.
Dr. Julian Bailes from the Brain Injury Research Institute says concussions can forever change the way the brain works. "I'm of the opinion more and more that a concussion is not necessarily hitting your head", she says. "It's the movement of the brain inside the skull which causes the tearing of the fibers."
Now, Congress is considering what they could put into a national law to protect athletes from the danger of returning to play, despite a concussion.
