LUBBOCK, Texas (September 29, 2010) – Estevan Ramirez's first goal of the season gave Lubbock Christian University a lead with 22:25 remaining and the Chaparrals went on to claim a 3-1 win in their Sooner Athletic Conference opener over Oklahoma Christian University Wednesday afternoon at the LCU Soccer Field.
The game was tied at 1-1 after OC's Cion Samuel snuck a 30-yard boot into the short side of the net past Chaps goalkeeper Alistair Caldwell. The goal, which ended Caldwell's shutout sequence of 221-minutes and 18-seconds, matched LCU's opening goal by Dustin Jones 16:29 into the game off a header from Gabriel Mendoza's free kick. Adrian Carpenter was tripped up with a defender in the box and the loose ball went right to the foot of Ramirez, who kicked a shot past goalkeeper Tim Spencer for a 2-1 LCU lead.
A foul against the Chaps led to an Eagles free kick a foot outside the box to present Tyler Brady an opportunity to tie the game, but his shot attempt hit the crossbar with 3:45 remaining. In a quick turn of events, LCU went down and scored 42 seconds later. Quinton Jackson scored his second goal of the season with a shot from the right side into the left corner of the net.
LCU was only able to get four shots on goal, but three ended up in the back of the net. LCU was out-shot in the game 17-13. Caldwell made five saves on six shots to earn the win in net (7-0-1).
The Chaparrals remain without a loss on the season, improving to 7-0-1 with the win and 1-0 in SAC play. OC drops to 0-8 overall and 0-1 in the SAC. The Chaps return to action Saturday at 1:30 pm playing at Mid-America Christian University.
